Question of The Week: How Do I Create a Book Proposal?
(with a free download!)
Your book proposal is an important document whether you self publish or publish traditionally. When you self publish, the book proposal helps you analyze your concept, your market, your ability to produce sales and your competition. It gives you great information about your audience and how they might hear about your book. And it gives you a starting place for building your marketing plan.
When you publish traditionally, the book proposal gives your agent or publisher this same information. It helps them determine how ready you are to publish, and how publishable your book is.
The bottom line is, no matter which route you choose to publish, creating a book proposal is a great idea.
So how do you do that?
You will need to know a lot of stuff about your book like:
- who will read it
- how you will market to those people
- what kind of books would compete with yours
- how your book is different than all of the books out there
Then, when you know the answers to those questions, you put that information into a comprehensive document that follows the outline of a book proposal.
I have created a downloadable checklist for your convenience…it is a complete outline of a book proposal with samples from my own proposal (which received high accolades). This is a great place to start. If you need more help, you can contact me on this website and I can answer any questions you might have.
Or better, comment below! You never know when your question and my answer will help someone else with their challenge.
