How to Pitch a Radio or Podcast Interview

Part of being a published author is being available for interviews. While few authors actually get on NPR or even land a coveted three-minute interview on Good Morning America, there are many opportunities for you to be interviewed by radio stations or podcasters nationwide. There are over 1000 talk radio stations across the country–and even more if you count Internet radio (i.e. Blog Talk Radio). That doesn’t even include local radio stations catering to specific audiences. You can also find many poscasters on iTunes–so start making a list!

The key to getting a radio interview is in your pitch–that’s your official inquiry to a radio personality letting them know about your topic of interest. (I won’t go into creative ways you can pitch specific book topics here–but that is something I work on with my 1:1 coaching clients). Your pitch needs to be eye-catching, specific and get to the point quickly. Radio personalities are extremely busy and swamped with pitches every day.

If you want to get interviewed, make sure you follow these tips:

  • Target the right stations. Don’t just send out a generic pitch to every single radio station. Instead, do some research and choose stations that cover your topic.
  • Do your research. Learn what you can about each station you want to target–you can find plenty of useful information on their website and through online reviews.
  • Make it personal. Write each cover letter specifically to the radio personality mentioning things they do or a reason why they would benefit from an interview with you (this shows you’ve done your homework)
  • Write great subject lines. Intriguing subject lines increase email opens. Instead of writing, New Book From Local Author, write a subject line about your expertise or a question you answer in your book: Do Independent Authors Face Discrimination?
  • Follow up. I always coach my author/clients to send five pitches out on Tuesday morning and send a quick follow up on Thursday afternoon. If you send more than five at a time, you will have a hard time following up in a timely manner. And followup is key to getting the interview.

If you follow these pointers, you will have much better odds at landing a radio interview to share about your book.

Two Bonus Tips!

  • The more interviews you do on a local level in smaller markets, the more appealing you become to larger markets (large cities, national stations).
  • The more interviews you do, the more recorded material you will have to post as podcasts or free informational downloads for your readers. This is a good thing!
