Some Call it Fear

Have You Ever Been Overwhelmed by Publishing?

stack of booksI walked into the bookstore and felt fear ice my blood. I was days away from publishing my book and I thought, “What do I have to offer that isn’t already in this huge store?” Hemingway. Hugo. King. Huge celebrities. Hundreds of How Tos. Lucado. Peretti. Dekker…So many important books. And good authors. And so many books. Did the world need one more book? Was there room?

Do these questions ever haunt you when you think about publishing your book?

They haunted me! They almost paralyzed me. They almost stopped me from reaching my dreams. But I didn’t let them.

I wish I had someone to talk to when I was going through this. Someone who could understand that these fears and doubts are normal. Someone who could guide me to the rational thoughts needed to replace the fear. I wish I would have voiced them to someone.

That is the cool thing about what I do now. In coaching others through their publishing process, I can see these thoughts rise in my author/clients. But instead of learning to face these fears on their own, the clients who work with me learn that these are common feelings. And when a feeling is common, it is not something to be afraid of.

A friend once told me that the physiologically, the feelings for fear and excitement are the same. She encouraged me to call my fear excitement and not let it overwhelm me. I still do that a lot and it works!

So what is scary to you?

  • Writing the book?
  • Publishing the book?
  • Having someone read your book?

Maybe you really aren’t scared at all. Maybe you are excited!

  • Excited about fulfilling a dream.
  • Excited about sharing your story.
  • Excited to have someone read your book and say, “Wow! That was good!”

I encourage you to keep on writing, keep on dreaming and keep on working your way towards becoming published.

Don’t let fear take away your dreams!

Call it excitement and keep on doing what you were meant to do!
